I believe that the evolution of a photographer is conditioned by the combination of several factors including the choice of style and the resources available to run or even, and especially, their imaginative horizons.
During the first years of my photographic experience I only bothered to understand all the technical details of image acquisition. That search led me to a preoccupation with the equipment used and led me inevitably to obtain a series of images devoid of content. Never bothered with it because it was still to establish the aesthetic and try to understand the many factors that affect the photographic process. Evolution took me to a path in which loose images were no longer satisfied me and I realized that my style (although considering that have not yet defined one and not even know if that will ever happen) would go through a set of conduct projects created from my experiences and professional and personal beliefs. At that moment, after reading a number of professional opinions, I decided to have my first case with analog. It was a totally frustrating experience as the adaptation to the equipment and the development process were (to a lazy like me who came from digital), too cumbersome and not very fruitful. I then decided to sell the Bronica and continue with digital. However, I continued to see the results of several colleagues and photographers of international renown as the great master Sebastião Salgado, and they were just too fabulous to ignore. Tired of shooting with the best lenses and the best cameras I decided to detach myself from the pressure of the equipment and return solely for the analog (except for about 10% of the images that result from work where the magic and quality of analog are not required). I bought a Mamiya 645AF and decided to start with film process C41 not to return to the frustrating cycle of traditional revelation that never managed to hit it and that later I’ll probably dedicate. After returning to film I understood the arguments from all who are on that boat. The truth is that having 16 images in the back instead of a 16GB card and that each of these images has a significant cost oblige me to think at the right time to make the shot. In spite of all the reasons, only that is enough to connect more intensely to the decisive moment and make it full of meaning. Of course I am more shy and lose some good pictures but still think the balance is very positive. And though at first not able to understand the improvement in terms of image, this time I completely surrendered to the quality and mystique that is implied in the analog process. For these reasons I will continue, while the evolutionary process did not take me for another way, to be a film geek and continue to admire all the photographers who will be venturing into the only true photographic genesis.
About thirty images of the almost one hundred and fifty that I made are in exhibition at Cultural Centre of Paredes de Coura. All images are analog and this project is the second one of a new photography live that started when I decided to work only on film. Hope you like. I will only post a few images on my website. You can see others on Flickr and on 500px (see about me section or in the top of this webpage for the web addresses).
